![]() ![]() ![]() The corrupt civil servants may be a parasite on society, but they do not rule it. She makes the important distinction between a bureaucracy proper and the deformation or corruption of civil services. Here Arendt further fleshes out the concept of bureaucracy. While bureaucracy in a distinct imperial territory could separate the lawlessness of, for example, India from the common law upheld in Britain, the pan-movements of the continent had to be explicitly hostile to law in general in order to create or support any similar type of bureaucracy. ![]() Furthermore, due to this proximity to the home government, continental imperialism had to be much more explicit and open about its disregard for the law. Unlike its siblings, the pan-movements were the offspring of continental imperialism and formed the clear spiritual precursors to Nazism and Bolshevism (Stalinism): Pan-Germanism and Pan-Slavism.Ĭontinental imperialism, as opposed to overseas imperialism, is distinguished by the belief that expansion must not include geographical distance between the colony and the nation. We have already briefly discussed the first two, but Arendt begins this section with discussion of the third. The three integral components of imperialism that would find another life in totalitarian movements are racism, bureaucracy and the "pan-" movements. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now, the film and the book do differ signficantly in terms of both structure and plot. ![]() ![]() I haven't rewatched the film since, but I have rewatched The Illusionist (which was based on a short story by Stephen Millhauser) and my conclusion is the same: The Prestige is the superior story. In February I listened to the auidobook version of Christopher Guest's novel, The Prestige, upon which Christopher Nolan based his film. At the time I greatly preferred The Presitge, but didn't put much thought into why. What can I say, I like stuff about magicians. I also watched The Illusionist (starring Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti) when that came out a few months later on DVD. I watched the film version of The Prestige (directed by Christoper Nolan and starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale) when it came out in cinemas in 2006. ![]() ![]() ![]() Also, as Phil Milstein notes, the Tzadik LP could just as well be called Dion McGregor Screams Again, given the shrieks which conclude many of the dream accounts. But advanced pricing techniques are being adopted by an ever-expanding variety of businesses. The “dynamic pricing” of airline flights and hotel rooms is probably the most familiar example. With advances in the ability to collect, store, and rapidly analyze data, many businesses have made great improvements. From sports to advertising to policing, we are seeing a shift from gut feel to statistical science.
